Francisco Javier Bonilla-Escobar, MD, MSc, PhD

Dr. Francisco Javier Bonilla-Escobar is a physician with a Master’s in Epidemiology from the Universidad del Valle in Colombia and a Ph.D. in Clinical Research and Translational Science from the University of Pittsburgh, United States. He holds a certification in Medical Education from Harvard Medical School Postgraduate Medical Education (Training to Teach (T2T) in Medicine).

He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Medical Students (IJMS), where he leads efforts to advance medical research and student scholarship globally. Dr. Bonilla-Escobar also serves as the CEO of the SCISCO Foundation (Science to Serve the Community), a Colombia-based organization dedicated to health research initiatives that focus on minorities and underserved communities. Additionally, he is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington, conducting advanced research in uveitis and immunology, and an Assistant Professor at Universidad del Valle, where he teaches research methods to medical residents.

Dr. Bonilla-Escobar collaborates with research groups in public health, ophthalmology and visual sciences, injuries, mental health, global surgery, and rehabilitation in both Colombia and the U.S. His academic contributions include over 60 scientific publications, more than 1,800 citations, and an h-index of 22 on Google Scholar. He is also a peer reviewer for several leading medical journals.

Recognized as an Associate Researcher by the Colombian Ministry of Science, Innovation & Technology—one of the highest distinctions for researchers in Colombia—he has been invited to deliver conferences and master classes in Mexico and Colombia. He has also served as a Teaching Assistant at the Institute for Clinical Research Education at the University of Pittsburgh, particularly in the Observational Study Design course.

Dr. Bonilla-Escobar’s work has been recognized by organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and the American College of Surgeons, reflecting his dedication to improving healthcare outcomes through research, education, and community engagement.
